Events as urban strategy

As our cities grow and evolve, we face both challenges and opportunities. Urban spaces, now more than ever, must serve multiple functions—offering housing, infrastructure, and places for culture, creativity, and connection. Events can become a key urban strategy, transforming underused spaces and fostering community in ways traditional city planning cannot.

In Helsinki, an estimated 623,000 square meters of office space currently sits vacant. Meanwhile, informal events like pop-up art shows and temporary markets breathe life into forgotten areas, turning vacant lots and empty buildings into vibrant social hubs. These grassroots efforts not only activate underutilized spaces but also foster a sense of belonging and ownership in the community. Studies show that well-designed public spaces can increase social cohesion by 83%, while vibrant street life boosts local economies by attracting visitors and increasing foot traffic.

What I ask for is simple: enable access to these spaces. No need for heavy regulations or branding—just open the doors and let the people create. In return, you’ll see a more dynamic, innovative, and connected city emerge from the ground up. Let the rhythm of our city unfold naturally.
